Five Green Ideas for All Seasons

There are so many great new products that allow us to be a bit more mindful when it comes to our homes and the products we use daily. While “clean” products were, in many cases, less efficient than the traditional alternatives, the latest products lose nothing in effectiveness! Here are some favorites

Clean With Just 3 Ingredients

Force of Nature is an appliance that turns tap water, plus a capsule of salt, water, and vinegar into a cleaner, deodorizer and disinfectant as effective as bleach. This system works effectively on countertops (granite being the exception) stainless steel, tubs and tile. It effectively replaces a multitude of chemical products and saves money as well as the environment over time.

500 Million Drinking Straws

That’s how many straws Americans use- DAILY. An incredible number! In an effort to slow the consumption of single-use plastics drinking straws are a huge step in the right direction. The best we’ve found is The Final Straw a collapsable aluminum straw in a keychain-sized carry case that includes a cleaning brush.

Love Your Produce

While we’ve pretty much gotten used to carrying shopping bags to the market and farmstand it’s a bit harder to remember bags for produce. Sandstone and Sage has created 100% organic cotton washable bags perfect for your fruits and vegetables. The weight of each bag is printed on the bag label allowing you to subtract the weight of the bag when checking out.

It’s a Wrap

Thin, flimsy, plastic-like bags are difficult to recycle; and even when plastic wrap is recycled, it’s costlier and when it ends up in landfills or incinerators, both PVC and PVDC can release a highly toxic chemical called dioxin.  Plastic wrap contributes to a larger plastic pollution crisis, picking picking up bacteria and metals in the oceans. Those contaminated pieces of microplastic then harm the fish that mistake them for food.

A way to lower your use of plastics is with beeswax wraps- these cotton cloths are treated with beeswax to seal out air and keep food fresh. Bees4seas offers pre-cut sheets, bulk rolls and DIY sheets that you can coat yourself as a project with children.

Zip it

Plastic zip lock bags are another flimsy plastic bag that is hard to recycle.  There are loads of bags on the market that are reuasble but the best of the bunch are Stasher bags . Aside from a wide varity of colors and sizes Stasher features the most reliable sealing system that defies leaks and spills.

What’s your favorite eco-friendly product- we’d love to hear!
