Detox and Heal Winter Skin: DIY Tea Tree & Charcoal Soap

by & filed under Be Inspired, Beauty.

charcoal soapI have to admit that I find black soap a bit intimidating. For as long as I can remember cleansing products have been white or pastel colored and foamy but after experiencing my 1st (expensive) bar of activated charcoal soap I’m a totally complete fan! Activated charcoal soap is detoxifying, exfoliating, clarifying and really feels goods without drying out skin. Lovely homemade soap is embarrassingly easy to make

Activated Charcoal is effective for people with acne-prone skin as it gently exfoliates and draws out dirt, oil and makeup that can clog pores. Adding tea tree oil adds natural antifungal and antiseptic properties.

There are a ton of varieties for bases (plain glycerin, olive oil, goats milk, honey, oatmeal, etc.). I chose a shea butter base for moisturizing. You can also add oils (like coconut) or add manuka honey to heal dry skin

Activated Charcoal + Tea Tree Soap

Prep time: 20 mins Total time: 20 mins

1 pound melt & pour shea butter soap base (available here)
5 activated charcoal capsules (buy online here)
15-20 drops tea tree essential oil (available here)

Cut the soap base into small chunks and melt over a double boiler.
Remove a small amount of soap into a cup, cool slightly, and mix in charcoal, then add back into the rest of the melted soap base.
Add the tea tree oil. If you don’t like the smell of tea tree, you can add peppermint essential oil to hide the scent.
Pour into mold (I used an ungreased muffin tin) and let cool.
