As you all know, Carlos Bakery was made famous by TLC’s TV show the Cake Boss which showcases Buddy ‘The Cake Boss” and his amazing family business in Hoboken, NJ.
It’s funny how things happen. A couple of months ago we visited Carlos Bakery to sign off on the design for our 10th anniversary party cake. While at Carlos Bakery I was aware of this amazing voice belting out Gloria Gaynor’s hit song I Will Survive. The fabulous voice belonged to Momma Mary, the matriarch of the family. She stops by the office most days for a couple of hours to see her family and friends. Her late husband, Carlo, started the bakery many years ago and Mary has always been a big part of the business. Sadly, Momma Mary has been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, also known as ALS.
While chatting with Carlo’s staff we discovered that they were planning an event and it was super special to the family. It was the first Annual Momma Mary Foundation Gala in aid of ALS. It transpired that a photographer for the red carpet shots was needed for the gala and of course Mac put his hand up to help out.
Mac shot a gorgeous photo of the family weeks before the event to be featured at the Gala, he captured this tight knit family with Mama Mary at its centre, against the dramatic NYC skyline.
Mac, Milena, and I attended the gala on October 23rd at the beautiful Rockleigh Country Club. Amongst over 600 guests were celebrities which included Al Roker and his lovely wife, Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera, and Randy Fenoli from TLC’s “Say Yes To The Dress” who was the fabulous and funny auctioneer for the evening. Everyone was decked out – Buddy and his family looking especially glamorous. Over $100,000 was raised which represents a very successful evening. The highlight of the evening was when Gloria Gaynor made a surprise appearence walking up to Momma Mary singing I Will Survive! Everyone joined in as Momma and the family sang their hearts out. It was a magical moment for everyone!
We were honored to donate our time to this great cause and to be included at such a special time with Momma Mary. She is truly extraordinary and has the singing voice to prove it!
