Undiscovered Treasure: Isla Holbox

Isla Holbox
I’m always looking for my next travel destination and my imagination has been captured by Isla Holbox.

Isla Holbox  (locals just call it Hol-bosh) is a small, slender island just north of Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula in the Gulf of Mexico. Locals know about this laid-back, go-everywhere-in-flip-flops getaway, but the news of Holbox’s beauty and ease of living has started to get out.

Holbox’s vibe is more barefoot on the beach than late nights at the club. If that weren’t incentive enough, it’s also a gorgeous destination, with clear green-blue waters in every direction. Be prepared, no cars are allowed on the island to protect the environment but local hotels offer transfers and there are short flights from Cancún and Playa del Carmen.

Check out boutique hotel and spa Hotelito de Las Tortugas run by an Italian couple who visited 10 years ago and fell in love with the island. Sample local cuisine from 8 am to 1 am daily at Basico Cocina de Playa featuring fresh-caught seafood.
